Teatime might need a new definition thanks to this boozy hibiscus iced tea!
Years ago I fulfilled myself a dream and made a trip to Egypt. After wandering the hot and dusty temples, on the bazaar or any other opportunity, I would drink hibiscus tea served hot with an amount of sugar that gives you instant cavity and puts you in a prediabetic state. Tea was served this way and don’t even think about customizing your drink, this is not Starbucks. These days I am convinced that the theory of drinking hot tea cools you down is not working for me, so I stick with iced tea during the heat of the summer. Also, I didn’t mind the sweetness back then but my taste changed entirely and I like my tea unsweetened now, but the hibiscus tea stuck with me and reminds me of my adventure.
What do I love about hibiscus? The taste is quite tart and cranberry-like and I got to admit I had to get used to omit any sweetener with this one but it will be rewarded with health benefits like reducing high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It’s also good for your immune and digestive system and now comes the disclaimer, it’s still not a medication but a good way to support your health. However, I added bourbon and now we can drink to our health and see how this works out…
